“When one door closes, another one opens.” – Alexander Graham Bell
There are countless sayings about doors in life. These ‘doors’ represent pivotal moments—opportunities, challenges, or new paths we can choose to walk through or avoid. Some doors are wide open, others locked tight, and some are slightly ajar, with a flicker of hope behind them. How we react to these moments doesn’t just define the situation—it defines us.
Over the years, I’ve stood before doors that felt impossibly heavy, paralysed by uncertainty and doubt. I questioned my readiness, my worth, and whether it was the right time to step through. But I’ve realised these doors are more than just metaphors—they mark life’s turning points. They’ve guided me through twists and turns, challenging me to shift my perspective and mindset.
Now, as I sit here and write, I can’t help but smile at how life tests us. Sometimes, it feels like the same lessons keep reappearing—whether in toxic relationships, unhealthy friendships, or those endless family cycles that feel like revolving doors. The truth is, how we approach these moments doesn’t just shape the outcome, but more importantly, it shapes who we become.
In the past, I’ve been guilty of trying to force old keys into new doors. But let’s be honest—have you ever tried slamming a revolving door?
We’ve all heard the saying, “When one door closes, another one opens.” It’s often said as comfort when life feels like it’s falling apart. This phrase has anchored me during times when doors seemed to slam shut all around me. And yet, even in chaos, life continues to unfold in ways we can’t always see.
“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
– Paulo Coelho
As Paulo Coelho writes in The Alchemist, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Over time, I’ve come to believe that God and the Universe are always working behind the scenes, aligning us with something far greater than we can imagine. Sometimes things need to fall apart—not because we aren’t enough, but because we’re being redirected toward where we’re meant to be.
This is the essence of faith: trusting the unknown and believing that every closed door is part of a greater plan, even when we don’t fully understand it. Faith means surrendering control and trusting in divine timing, knowing that God is moving the pieces we can’t yet see.
Then there’s the bold reminder: “If the door doesn’t open, kick it down.” This speaks to those moments when waiting isn’t an option, and life demands action. It’s for the times when patience runs thin, and instead of waiting for opportunities, we take control and forge our own path. This mindset taps into the inner warrior—the part of us that refuses to accept “no” as the final answer. It’s the mantra of the relentless, the hustlers, the go-getters, the ones who don’t sit back and wait for life to happen. They push harder, make their presence known, and carve their own way forward, driven by the belief that “Success is on the other side of fear,” reminding us that the only true limitation is ourselves.
“The magic we each hold is just waiting to be tapped into.”
But sometimes, the answer isn’t force. There’s a quiet wisdom in the saying, “If the door doesn’t open, try the window.” reminding us that the most obvious path isn’t always the right one. When life backs us into a corner, it’s easy to feel defeated, but often it’s urging us to shift our perspective and embrace the opportunity to grow. This is where creativity and resilience come into play. When our plans fall apart, it’s an invitation to think outside the box and trust that the solutions we need are already within us—the magic we each hold is just waiting to be tapped into.
I often think of MacGyver—how he used whatever was at hand to navigate impossible situations. Life demands that same ingenuity, offering us the choice to adapt and uncover strengths we didn’t know we had. It’s not about forcing an outcome but trusting ourselves to create the best path forward, even if it looks nothing like what we first imagined.
It’s a friendly reminder that creativity and perspective are the backbone of innovation, driving problem solvers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries. These qualities transform obstacles into opportunities and turn setbacks into stepping stones, using hope as the bridge that connects problems to solutions.
Of all the common metaphors for the doors of life, one of the greatest lessons I’ve learnt is that sometimes, the door was never even locked! It was there all along, waiting for us to take a deep breath, summon our courage, and turn the handle. So often, we let our doubts make the door seem heavier and more daunting than it really is, with the door simply reflecting the inner barriers we’ve created as coping mechanisms to navigate life.
As I reflect on the doors I’ve faced, I realise now that the ones that stayed closed weren’t there to block me. They weren’t dead ends—they were opportunities for transformation, preparing me for what was to come. The challenges we face aren’t meant to stop us; they shape us, refine us, and keep us aligned with who we are becoming.
The real challenge isn’t the door itself—it’s trusting ourselves enough to have the courage to open it, even when we don’t know what lies ahead. Walking through is an act of faith—faith in yourself, your journey, and your ability to handle whatever comes next. It’s about recognising that the door is there for you, and all it takes is a leap of faith—trusting that God, the Universe, or whatever source you seek strength from, will never give you more than you can handle.
At times, we find ourselves dwelling on the doors of the past or feeling anxious about the countless opportunities of the future. But there is immense power in being present and grateful for where you are right now. As the quote says, “Until God opens the next door, don’t forget to praise him in the hallway.” This always grounds me—a reminder to appreciate the now, to be grateful for who I am and what I have, even as I wait for the next door.
Every door and every transition teaches us something—about gratitude, faith, creativity, resilience, and the courage to keep showing up, even when the path ahead is unclear.
“Sometimes opportunity knocks loudly, sometimes it’s a faint whisper, and other times temptation keeps ringing the doorbell, trying to distract you.”
Essentially, these doors and windows represent moments for growth. The real wisdom lies in knowing which ones to open, which ones to break down, and which ones require us to climb through. Sometimes opportunity knocks loudly, sometimes it’s a faint whisper, and other times temptation keeps ringing the doorbell, trying to distract you. But ultimately, the courage and perspective you choose to embrace are yours.
So, as I stand before the next door life has placed before me, I’m reminded of all the doors I’ve faced—each one teaching me something new, shaping who I’ve become. Whether the door opens effortlessly, remains closed, or requires creative thinking to move past, I know every step has brought me closer to where I’m meant to be.
My greatest hope for you is that when you stand before your own doors, you don’t just find the courage to push them open, but to walk through confidently, knowing that every challenge is part of your growth and journey. It’s a chance to live, learn, and be grateful for where you are in between. But most importantly, it’s a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful change comes from realising the door was never locked—it was simply waiting for you to summon the courage to walk through.
