“Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” — Rumi
What if a single word could change everything—not just for you, but for someone else? A word that revives a broken spirit, brings peace to chaos, and plants seeds of love where doubt has taken root.
Words possess undeniable power—they don’t just communicate; they shape our reality, define our connections, and reflect our emotions. Like a poet carefully crafting each phrase, the right words can reveal beauty in even the most ordinary moments, painting emotions so vividly they move us to tears. Yet, when wielded carelessly, words can cut deeper than any blade, leaving invisible scars long after the echoes fade.
If you asked me what superpower I’d choose, it wouldn’t be the usual ones like flight or invisibility. Don’t get me wrong—there’s something undeniably exciting about the idea of soaring through the skies or disappearing at will. In fact, I’m such a sucker for superhero movies that I rented out an entire cinema on my 30th birthday just to watch The Avengers with my closest friends and family, completely immersed in the action without the distraction of a crowded theatre. There’s a thrill in watching heroes selflessly use their extraordinary abilities to save the world, defeat evil, and protect those they love.
But when it comes down to it, my superpower wouldn’t be X-ray vision or super strength—it would be something far less flashy but infinitely more powerful: The Power of Persuasion.
Just imagine… Imagine having the ability to talk world leaders out of wars, inspire future generations to embrace self-love and inclusiveness, or encourage someone to change their life without worrying what the world thinks—not through control, but by helping them see the strength they already hold within. To convince someone, not through coercion, but with kindness and empathy, that they can love themselves, make better choices, and discover their purpose.
“There’s a quiet beauty in that kind of power—the ability to transform someone’s perspective, guiding them to that pivotal moment of realisation where everything finally clicks.”
Words might not be as dramatic as flying or stopping time, but they can shape realities, build bridges, and heal wounds we don’t always see. I know… it might sound a bit corny (I always say the corny things), but there’s a quiet beauty in that kind of power—the ability to transform someone’s perspective, guiding them to that pivotal moment of realisation where everything finally clicks. It’s not about controlling actions but about encouraging belief in oneself and allowing them to act independently. That’s why persuasion is my ultimate superpower—the ability to inspire change from within, one word, one conversation at a time.
Growing up, I learned the power of words—though not always for the better. In my household, the loudest voice and sharpest words always won, and I learned to fight with my tongue rather than my heart. Breaking free from the toxic cycle of fight or flight, and unlearning those patterns, was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Replacing harshness with empathy and judgement with understanding became a turning point in my personal growth. I realised that it’s not just what you say, but how you say it that either leaves scars or creates a lasting impact. When used with intention and care, words can shift not only my own life but also heal, uplift, and transform the lives of others.
For years, I equated bluntness with honesty, believing that being direct was the only way to communicate truth. I lived by the motto, “I don’t sugarcoat shit and call it a donut.” But with time and experience, I realised that my words could wound just as deeply as they could heal. Though well-intentioned, my bluntness often created distance in the relationships that mattered most. I learned that honesty isn’t about being harsh—it’s about empathy, kindness, and understanding.
It’s easy to be blunt and rude and disguise it as being honest, but it takes real skill and intelligence to find the right words and master the art of being truthful with kindness and compassion.
“Stories are just data with a soul.”
Brené Brown
Brené Brown, an emotions researcher and bestselling author, said in her TEDx talk, “Stories are just data with a soul.” That one sentence inspired me to journal and allowed me to bring that soul to life. It became my way of harnessing that power—a space to pour my thoughts, emotions, and ideas into something meaningful. Words became my tool for healing, connection, and expression, creating a safe space for my fleeting thoughts and impulsive emotions to ride the waves.
“Words don’t just tell stories—they build bridges between hearts and minds.”
Though storytelling requires authenticity, honesty, and vulnerability, it also forges deep connections with people from all walks of life. Through the power of persuasion, I’ve learned that words don’t just tell stories—they build bridges between hearts and minds.
Words shape our lives more profoundly than we often realise. One of the most profound moments in my life was hearing my son, like the rarest flower blooming in its own time, speak his first words, reminding me of the power in even the quietest voices. Hearing him say “I love you” reminded me that even the simplest words can carry extraordinary weight—far more than I could have ever imagined. These moments show just how powerful words truly are.
When I reflect on it, I’m amazed at how a simple, heartfelt compliment from a stranger can lift a cloud of doubt you didn’t even realise you were carrying. A few wise words from a friend can feel like an anchor in a storm, grounding you when life feels overwhelming. And when someone acknowledges a kindness you thought went unnoticed, it can rekindle your faith in the goodness of others.
Small exchanges like these can shift our perspective entirely. They remind us that in those moments, we have the capacity to make a difference in someone’s life, even if just for a brief second.
But the most powerful words are the ones we say to ourselves. Our internal dialogue shapes who we become. The words we tell ourselves when no one else is listening determine our mindset, our confidence, and the direction we take. Before we can truly inspire others, we must first nurture belief in ourselves. We must remind ourselves, “I am enough. I am capable. I can make a difference.”
In a world that feels disconnected, words are how we reconnect to our shared humanity. Too often, words are disposed of so quickly, with a click of a button or the lash of a sharp tongue—faster than a snake’s strike. Yet, those same words can leave lasting wounds or, when chosen thoughtfully, create bonds of understanding and healing. Words spoken from the heart can change lives, whether it’s face-to-face, written in a note, or shared in a post that resonates with someone worldwide.
The truth is, we all have a superpower. It’s in the words we choose, the stories we tell, and the connections we create. When used with compassion, kindness, and intention, words can help others feel seen, heard, and valued, reminding them they are not alone.
“Not the kind of ‘keyboard warrior’ waging battles from behind a screen, but rather an unseen hero, using words to foster understanding, inspire growth, and quietly make a difference.”
Perhaps that’s why I’ve turned to writing—to create a ripple of change in a world that often feels overwhelming. Not the kind of ‘keyboard warrior’ waging battles from behind a screen, but rather an unseen hero, using words to foster understanding, inspire growth, and quietly make a difference. Every sentence becomes an act of connection, every story a seed planted in the hopes of inspiring purpose and change.
Not all heroes wear capes; some share knowledge, wisdom, and self-expression through public speaking, poetry, and music. Others do so through books, as business leaders and innovators, or as human rights activists who fight tirelessly for justice and equality, using their words to inspire change and challenge injustice—or as parents who have relearned the art of speaking with love and purpose, breaking cycles of toxicity and trauma. These heroes may not stand in the spotlight, but their quiet actions create ripples, touching lives in ways that often go unseen, yet leave a profound and lasting impact.
The real question isn’t whether a single word can change everything—but when will we start using our words to change the world?
It’s not just about what you say; it’s about how your words make others feel. While none of us are perfect in our use of them, self-awareness and intent are where transformation begins.
So, if you could change the world, what superpower would you choose? Would the words you speak make a positive impact to those around you? But more importantly, if the world were blind, would your words still make you beautiful?
