Gratitude and Glimmers: Illuminating True Happiness This Season

“If you have forgotten the language of gratitude, then you will never be on speaking terms with happiness.”

The Season of Gratitude

As the season of giving approaches, with Christmas lights twinkling and festive cheer in the air, it’s easy to get swept up in the rush of buying gifts, planning feasts, and chasing perfection. Yet amidst the sparkle and busyness, we often forget to pause and appreciate what we already have—the warmth of loved ones, the comfort of home, and the quiet, everyday blessings that form the foundation of joy.

It’s easy to take happiness for granted, treating it as a destination we’re striving toward rather than something we can cultivate right now. The truth is, happiness doesn’t just arrive—it’s invited in, and gratitude holds the key to opening that door.

Gratitude: A Transformative Force

Gratitude is an unspoken language of the soul, quietly transforming how we see and experience the world. Once you learn to speak it, you notice the world responding in kind. Colours seem brighter, the air feels lighter, and even the smallest moments take on new meaning. Gratitude isn’t just a fleeting feeling; it’s a practice, a muscle we strengthen through use.

It teaches us to pause, to see the world with softer eyes, and to notice the beauty that already surrounds us. Without gratitude, life can feel like an endless pursuit of what’s missing. With it, even the most ordinary moments shine.

My Ritual of Gratitude

Last year, I started a little ritual that’s been a game-changer for my mental health. (Warning: we all know corny is my love language.) Each morning, I’d write down one thing I was grateful for—just one—and drop it into my gratitude jar. Nothing big or fancy. It wasn’t about grandeur; it was about the small, quiet treasures that often go unnoticed.

Some days, it was as simple as loving my smile or appreciating how my laugh could light up a room. Other days, it was the cheeky joy of acknowledging physical things I loved about myself—like jokingly saying, “I love me with all my ass because it’s bigger than my heart.” And sometimes, it was something deeper—admiring my resilience or my courage to face fears, even when I was scared. It didn’t matter how small or profound it seemed at the time; every note was a moment of connection with myself, a reminder of who I am and the life I’m creating.

It sounds almost too simple to matter, right? But here’s the thing: whenever I’m having a rough day or feeling disconnected, I pull out one of those little notes. They’re dated, and sometimes I’m stunned by how much I’ve grown since writing them. A note of self-love from months ago might transport me back to a time when I was struggling yet still found something to celebrate. Each note is like a breadcrumb, leading me back to myself. Together, they tell a story—my story. A story of growth, healing, and choosing to see the good, even when life wasn’t perfect.

The Science Behind Gratitude

And this isn’t just feel-good fluff—science actually backs it up (yes, even my love language of being corny has research on its side).

Research shows that practising gratitude can have a real, lasting impact on our mental health and well-being. When we focus on what we’re thankful for, it activates areas of the brain like the medial prefrontal cortex, which is linked to happiness, emotional balance, and feeling rewarded.

Gratitude has even been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, which is why some call it a “natural antidepressant.” Over time, regularly practising gratitude helps train our brains to focus more on the positive, making it easier to find joy and stay resilient, even during tough times.

Gratitude is like a mental workout; the more you practise it, the stronger those pathways become. Over time, gratitude literally rewires your brain for joy, making it easier to find and hold on to the good in life.

I can personally attest to the positive effects of writing out gratitude. Since starting this practice, I’ve found myself complaining less and focusing more on the beauty in small, everyday moments. Whether it’s recognising how a setback became an opportunity for learning, a lesson in patience, or a chance to be present in the moment, this ritual has shifted how I approach life. Gratitude has opened my eyes to joys I might have otherwise overlooked.

Glimmers: Tiny Sparks of Joy

I recently came across a concept on Instagram that resonated deeply with me: glimmers.

Glimmers are those tiny, often unnoticed moments of joy and connection—a stranger’s smile, the way the wind brushes your face, or hearing your favourite song unexpectedly. They are the small sparks that light up the mundane, quietly reminding us that beauty exists in the everyday.

What struck me most is how glimmers are the opposite of triggers. While triggers activate our stress or fear responses, glimmers awaken our sense of safety and happiness. Triggers remind us of pain or discomfort, but glimmers gently call our attention to joy and connection.

By training ourselves to notice these positive moments, we can create a buffer against the stressors of daily life. The more we practise seeking out glimmers, the more we realise how many are already around us, quietly waiting to be acknowledged.

Gratitude in Hard Times

There’s an old Buddhist story that captures this perfectly:

A monk once asked his teacher, “What is the key to happiness?”
The teacher replied, “Gratitude.”
The monk pressed further. “What about when life is hard? When I am suffering?”
The teacher smiled gently. “Gratitude then, too.”

This story reminds us that gratitude isn’t reserved for the easy times. In hard times, it becomes our anchor, grounding us in the present and helping us navigate the storm.

The Invitation

Here’s the beautiful thing about gratitude: it grows. It reminds us that life isn’t about waiting for perfection; it’s about finding grace in the imperfect. It’s about seeing the bigger picture when we feel small and noticing the simple abundance we often overlook. Gratitude doesn’t erase our challenges, but it softens their edges by balancing them with what’s good.

So here’s my invitation to you: start small. Begin your day by saying out loud one thing you’re grateful for, no matter how simple or ordinary it may seem. Speak it into existence as you’re getting ready or on your way to work. Then, if you can, write it down—whether it’s in a notebook, a gratitude journal, or even a quick note on your phone.

These small acts of gratitude can create ripples, turning ordinary moments into something extraordinary. Make it a ritual. And when life feels overwhelming, return to those moments of gratitude. Let them remind you of the abundance that exists, even amidst imperfection.

Gratitude at Christmas

As Christmas draws near, let’s remember that gratitude is the true heart of the season. Beyond the gifts and gatherings, it’s about cherishing what we already have—the love we share, the connections we nurture, and the beauty in everyday moments.

Just as we decorate our homes with twinkling lights, let gratitude illuminate our hearts, bringing warmth and meaning to everything we do.

Gratitude isn’t just an act; it’s a mindset, a way of being. It’s how we learn to speak the language of happiness fluently, how we open ourselves to the beauty that’s already here. Count your blessings, seek out those glimmers, and let gratitude lead the way. You might discover that happiness has been waiting for you all along.
